Gasket Tape / Strip Gasket

What is gasket tape?

Stockwell Elastomerics pre-manufactures master logs (e.g. 36″ wide x 20′ long rolls) of adhesive backed open cell foams and closed cell sponges. These master logs are ready to be slit-to-width (to customer’s defined width), most materials offered can be slit from 1/4″ (6.4mm) up to 34″ (863mm) wide. This pre-manufacturing process allows for quick turns to meet short deadlines. The length of the gasket tape / strip gasket depends on the specific product (see charts below). Each product listed below offers a unique solution to gasketing and sealing requirements.

Modified closed cell silicone foam gasket tape. This silicone foam tape offers excellent long term rebound for critical sealing applications such as indoor or outdoor enclosure gaskets needing to meet NEMA and IP standards. HT-800 silicone foam is UL listed for flame (UL 94V-0) and for several gasket applications including UL 50 and UL 50E periodic recompression.

Modified closed cell silicone foam tape offers excellent long term memory. DP-1001 polyimide film supported silicone pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) has optimum high temperature performance (good to 450°F) and a longer shelf life than most silicone adhesives. Film support prevents stretching.

Soft silicone foam gasket tape. This soft open cell silicone foam has a fine pitched cell structure making it good for dust seal and light water sealing. HT-870 has excellent rebound, is UV resistant, and is UL listed for several gasket applications. The softness of this strip gasket allows for good compression with lower clamping force. Testing for suitability in wet applications is recommended due to the open cells.

Very soft silicone foam gasket tape. This very soft open cell silicone foam is good for dust seals, and cushioning, light water mist sealing. SNS 512 has excellent rebound and is UV resistant. Soft closed cell silicone sponge gasket tape uses a UL 50E rated silicone with a strong acrylic adhesive backing. Stockwell Elastomerics’ 480S Gasket Tape is made from Saint-Gobain’s soft, low compression set R10480S, making it easy to compress while limiting door or housing flex. 480S gasket tape is good for water sealing and dust sealing (e.g. NEMA, IP6X and UL 50E); common applications include NEMA enclosure gasket, digital signage gaskets, and electric sign gaskets. This long life, silicone sponge gasket tape has excellent long term rebound and is UV resistant. The strong acrylic adhesive backing is well suited for bonding to high, medium and some low surface energy substrates.

SNS 100S gasket tape is good for water seals and dust seals (e.g. NEMA and IP), especially where there are wide operating temperatures. This silicone sponge gasket tape has excellent rebound, is UL listed for gasketing in lighting fixtures, and UV resistant. The Low/Medium strength adhesive backing is well suited for extreme temperatures. Silicone sponge is tougher than silicone foam.

Reinforced closed cell silicone sponge gasket tape. This unique medium firmness silicone sponge is made with an embedded fiberglass reinforcement which offers exceptional X & Y axis stability (no stretching during install). SNS 300AR has an unsupported (transfer) acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) backing. This gasket tape is good for applications where dimensional stability and higher tensile strength are required. Uses include water seals and dust seals, where the operating temperatures are not extreme. This long life silicone sponge gasket tape has excellent long term rebound and is UV resistant. The strong adhesive backing is well suited for bonding to high, medium and some low surface energy substrates.

What are the different adhesives? – Silicone based adhesives are most commonly specified when a gasketing application needs to meet a wide temperature range. Acrylic based adhesives have a tighter operating temperature range than silicone, they are available in a variety of bonding strengths and cost less than silicone adhesives. A supported (or double coated) structure indicates a thin layer of PET is embedded in the adhesive which gives the gasket tape some X and Y axis dimensional stability. An unsupported adhesive, also called a transfer adhesive, is a thin, “stretchy” adhesive backing offering no X or Y axis stability.

Choose one of the silicone foams or silicone sponges and combine with a stock adhesive to develop a custom combination that meets a unique design requirement. Note: custom gasket tape requires a minimum order. Small sample or test swatches are available for test bonding.
