Connector Gaskets

Stocked EMI shielding gaskets for standard connectors

Gold-colored flectron film wrapped around a foam connector and bonded to a molded part

Custom connector gaskets, per customer designs, are frequently manufactured by Stockwell Elastomerics. Low volume flat gaskets can be waterjet cut with no tooling cost. Higher volumes of flat gaskets are typically die cut, often with low cost steel rule dies. Stockwell Elastomerics also compression molds and injection molds specialty connector gaskets.

MIL-DTL-83528/4 Conductive Shielding Gasket, EMI/RFI – Flange Mount

Stockwell Elastomerics manufactures MIL-DTL-83528/4F conductive flange gaskets made from MIL-DTL-83528E Type B and MIL-DTL-83528E Type D materials. Stockwell Elastomerics also manufactures custom EMI gaskets from these QPL listed, silver-plated, aluminum-filled materials.

In addition, Stockwell Elastomerics offers commercial grade EMI materials that have been tested and meet the MIL-DTL-83528 shielding requirements at very competitive price points. These materials are widely used for applications that do not have the mil grade mandate.

MIL-DTL-83528E Type B Material Description

Silver-plated, aluminum-filled silicone, capable of 100 dB of plane wave shielding effectiveness at 10 GHz with a continuous use temperature range of -55°C to +160°C.

MIL-DTL-83528E Type D Material Description

Silver-plated, aluminum-filled fluorosilicone, capable of 90 dB of plane wave shielding effectiveness at 10 GHz with a continuous use temperature range of -55°C to +160°C. In MIL-DTL-83528E Type D material, fluorosilicone rubber is used where added chemical resistance is needed.

Molded Connector Gasket

Stockwell Elastomerics custom molds connector gaskets using injection molding or compression molding. The process depends on the material required; EMI connector gaskets and fluorosilicone connector gaskets are compression molded and liquid silicone rubber connector gaskets are injection molded.

Soft Connector Gasket

Stockwell Elastomerics manufactures custom connector gaskets from a range of soft materials. I/O gaskets, D-sub gaskets, display connector gaskets and other connectors with thumb screws and limited compressive loads generally require soft materials to achieve proper gasket compression. Ultra soft silicone foam, soft PORON® and low durometer solid siliconematerials can be used.

Black, gray, and blue sponge connector gaskets with arrays of pin holes Custom D-Sub Gasket

D-sub connector gaskets are custom made to customer specifications. These can be made to seal the outer connector shell or with pin holes to fit internally in the connector. Soft, electrically insulating materials are most commonly specified. Materials for D-sub gaskets range widely depending on the application.

Fuel Resistant Connector Gasket

For applications requiring fuel resistance, Stockwell Elastomerics manufactures fluorosilicone connector gaskets. Fluorosilicone gaskets are molded or waterjet cut to customer specification. Solid fluorosilicone sheets and molded parts range from 40 – 70 durometer on the Shore A hardness scale. Expanded fluorosilicone sponge is also available in sheets.

Rendering of blue solid silicone gland plate connector gasket with raised lips on cable holes Gland Plate Gasket

An enclosure gland plate is the removable plate on an electrical enclosure where wiring or connectors enter. Gland plates are generally custom made for specific applications. Sealing the gland plate is equally important as sealing the doors on NEMA enclosures and UL enclosures.

PORON urethane foam is a good option for NEMA Type 3, IP54 and lower. More aggressive requirements such and NEMA Type 4, IP64 and up may require closed cell materials or solid material. Outdoor applications intended for long life should consider silicone sponge, silicone foam or solid silicone due to its resistance against UV and ozone (possibly generated in the enclosure).

Silicone Flange Gasket

Flange gaskets are usually made from heavy duty fiber or composite materials to address high pressures, steam or chemicals. Stockwell manufactures silicone flange gasket for unique applications where silicone properties are required. This may include low temperatures, low durometers or UV/ozone resistance. Quite often the “flange” call-out just describes the shape of the gasket; such as a square gasket with bolt holes in four corners and a larger hole in the center.

Foam Connector Gasket

Foam connector gaskets allow for sealing with low clamping forces. PORON foam connector gaskets work well for dust sealing and light splashing applications. Silicone foam has a wide temperature range allowing proper compression in freezing temperatures. PORON gaskets and silicone foam gaskets offer excellent compression set resistance. Compression set resistance represents the material’s ability to rebound after be being compressed or deflected. This is a key property for connector gaskets since they may be compressed and released on a regular basis.
